This Day in History: On this day in 1974, French high-wire artist Philippe Petit dazzled the world by walking between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on a 26-foot long steel cable.

In 45 minutes, Petit made eight crossings between the towers, sat on the wire, gave knee salutes, and spoke with a gull circling above his head while lying on the wire.
